Senior Labour MP Yvette Cooper has called on Jeremy Corbyn to "stand down swiftly" as party leader – and refused to rule out her own leadership bid. Cooper said Corbyn would be letting down communities "who badly need a Labour government" if he failed to bow to pressure and resign.

Yvette Cooper has warned that Jeremy Corbyn has no alternative plan for the country’s post-Brexit future, in a speech in which she said she would not rule out standing for the Labour leadership should the position fall vacant. Speaking before the result of a no-confidence vote in Corbyn’s leadership, expected at 5pm on Tuesday, Cooper said time was running out for progressive opposition figures to begin setting out their stall for what a departed UK should look like.

That dream is now over. As Charles Grant, the director of the Centre for European Reform think-tank put it: "Brexit is a momentous event in the history of Europe and from now on the narrative will be one of disintegration not integration."
