Charles Grant, director of the Centre for European Reform, said Mr Johnson — the frontrunner — could have chosen a strategy of “putting lipstick” on Theresa May’s deal and trying to ram it through parliament in the autumn.

“He seems to be the prisoner of his own rhetoric, he’s closing off escape routes,” said Mr Grant, who has been speaking to senior EU figures about the prospects for Brexit. Mr Hunt also proclaimed the backstop “dead”.
