We are already £900 a year worse off because of Brexit
Deputy director of the Centre for Economic Reform, John Springford, said that losses in the nation’s income would be felt by everyday Brits, who are now hundreds of pounds poorer per year.He told Metro.co.uk : [The research] means that the average person in Britain would be 3% richer if remain had won. ‘The way that that has come through is because we have had quite a lot of inflation, because the pound has declined in value. That means that imported foods and goods have become more expensive. That’s the way that [the economy] has had less income. ‘It also means businesses are less willing to invest. When they do, they take on more people, and the pay becomes a bit more because people are more productive.’
...Mr Springford said the economy was unlikely to regain ground lost since 2016, with its recovery depending on how post-Brexit trade negotiations play out. He said: ‘The big question is what type of trade deal we will strike. We have already seen that investment has taken a big hit before we have even left. Companies are worried about what the cost of Brexit is going to be. There’s still a risk there’s going to be a no-deal. ‘If there is a really amazing trade deal that resembles the single market, we could make up for the losses. But that’s highly unlikely.’
